Earth's Moving Plates

Earth's outer shell is not one solid piece. It is broken into enormous slabs called tectonic plates. These plates float on a slow-moving layer of hot, soft rock beneath the crust. Although plates shift only a few centimeters each year—about as fast as your fingernails grow—their motion shapes mountains, ocean trenches, and earthquake zones across the planet. Most geologic activity occurs at plate boundaries. When two plates push together, rock can crumple upward to form mountain ranges such as the Himalayas, which continue rising as India pushes into Asia. When plates pull apart, molten rock may rise and create new seafloor or fill rift valleys with volcanic material. A third boundary type forms when plates slide past each other. The San Andreas Fault in California is a famous example where stored stress can release suddenly as earthquakes. Scientists gather evidence for plate motion f…

Energy Never Disappears

Physicists describe energy as the ability to do work or cause change. A loudspeaker vibrates because electrical energy becomes sound. A sprinter explodes from the starting block because stored chemical energy in muscles transforms into motion. One of the most useful rules in science is that energy is not created or destroyed—it changes form. Consider a hydroelectric dam. Sunlight evaporates water from oceans and lakes. Water vapor rises, cools, and falls as rain in mountains. Rivers carry that water downhill, storing gravitational potential energy. When engineers release water through turbines, kinetic energy spins generators that produce electricity. At each step, some energy spreads into the environment as thermal energy—often called wasted heat—but the total amount remains consistent. In ecosystems, energy flows differently than nutrients. Producers such as plants capture sunlight t…
